Tools for Tots Book

Tools for Tots is a unique resource designed to offer
practical, user-friendly sensory options to improve the ability
of toddlers and preschoolers to function in their home, child
care centers, and public spaces. The book opens with a brief
overview of sensory processing and characteristics of sensory
processing disorder. Then, strategies are provided for how to
address challenging behaviors that may have an underling
sensory component, as well as elicit engagement from hardto-
engage children (such as those with autism). The strategies
are broken down in to a 'buffet' of sensory tools including
movement, muscle, touch, ear, eye, nose, and mouth tools. All
of the information is presented in an easy-to-read, friendly
format for parents, childcare providers, therapists, teachers,
early interventionists, other health care professionals, and
anyone who works with young children.

As a developmental/behavioral pediatrician who cares for many children with autism spectrum disorders and sensory integration issues, I am very excited about Tools for Tots. Written by three very experienced occupational therapists, it is loaded with savvy practical tactics that parents can readily use from the time their child wakes up until they go to sleep...

The authors provide practical, developmentally sensitive, and creative information to help create an optimal fit between environments and young children with sensory-based behavioral challenges. The suggestions will be helpful for parents of typically-developing children, as well as those with sensory processing diagnoses. I love the grounding of behavioral challenges in the everyday activities that can make such a difference in the quality of life for children and families.

Diana, Maureen and Sue continue to be a wellspring of joy and creativity. These terrific suggestions for little kids with SPD help us to be ever mindful of the concept of 'all play', so that everyone in their circle will get in sync.
